First Rocketsonde Launched from an Unmanned Semi-submersible Vehicle

Abstract: The unmanned semi-submersible vehicle (USSV) developed by the unmanned surface vehicle team of the Institute of Atmospheric Physics is an unmanned, rugged, and high-endurance autonomous navigation vessel designed for the collection of long-term, continuous and real-time marine meteorological measurements, including atmospheric sounding in the lower troposphere. A series of river and sea trials were conducted from May 2016 to November 2017, and the first rocketsonde was launched from the USSV. Real-time meteoro… Show more

“…Autonomous vessels are not only developed and deployed as a means of transport for goods. They are used for environmental and water monitoring (Moulton et al 2018;Berman et al 2020;Chensky et al 2021), to collect marine meteorological measurements (Chen et al 2019a), to monitor and collect data from wetlands (Odetti et al 2018), to make hydrological measurements (Da , to map the underwater bed and collect bathymetric data from inland and coastal environment (Sanfilippo et al 2021;Dohner et al 2022;Marchel et al 2020;Mohd Adam et al 2021) and to perform hydrographic surveys (Stateczny et al 2018).…”

“…Meteorological sounding by rockets (rocketsondes) has been utilized in the past for lower and upper stratospheric atmospheric monitoring [ 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ]. Most current rocket sounding relates to the probing of the upper atmosphere [ 16 , 18 , 19 ]. Rockets provide a simple way to access higher portions of the atmosphere.…”

“…From 2017 to 2020, the USV and USSV have completed dozens of sea tests and trials, and have sailed thousands of kilometers in total. The world's first rocketsonde was launched from the USSV in 2017 (Chen et al, 2019b). The IAP USV is a long-term, rugged, and unmanned autonomous navigation vessel (Fig.…”
