First serological evidence of West Nile virus in human rural populations of Gabon

Abstract: To investigate West Nile virus (WNV) circulation in rural populations in Gabon, we undertook a large serological survey focusing on human rural populations, using two different ELISA assays. A sample was considered positive when it reacted in both tests. A total of 2320 villagers from 115 villages were interviewed and sampled. Surprisingly, the WNV-specific IgG prevalence was high overall (27.2%) and varied according to the ecosystem: 23.7% in forested regions, 21.8% in savanna, and 64.9% in the lakes region. … Show more

“…Also, it has been shown that seroprevalence increases with age, with a higher frequency in people over 40 years old. This age-dependent difference in seroprevalence was also found in other studies; in 2003 in Madagascar [12], and in 2010 in Gabon [8]. A greater risk of exposure of people over 40 years of age to mosquito bites could be the cause of this difference.…”

“…Evidence of high exposure among older people was found in previous studies in Israel [7, 13, 14] and in other countries [18, 22]. However, using the number of years lived in Israel has allowed us to differentiate between being old and spending more time in Israel.…”

“…Studies conducted in several sub-Saharan countries have reported a quite variable seroprevalence in humans [120,[163][164][165] , with few documented clinical cases, but these data should be taken carefully since most studies have not addressed possible cross-reactivity with other circulating flaviviruses, and clinical cases may have been attributed to other diseases that present similar symptoms. Serological evidence of WNV infection has also been described in horses in the continent [165] .…”
