First Solid‐State Structures of Real Diorganyl Phosphinous Acids R2POH (R=CF3, C2F5)

Abstract: Ring or chain? The two known phosphinous acids, (CF3)2POH and (C2F5)2POH, reveal hydrogen‐bridged aggregates in the solid state (see figure). The CF3 derivative forms helical chains, whereas the increased sterical demand of the C2F5 group leads to the formation of tetramers. The high catalytic activity of their palladium complexes (TON 24500) is highlighted in the field of cross‐coupling reactions.

“…Likewise, P–Pt–P angles values are consistent with those reported for similar complexes bearing either PAs or bidentate phosphines, as ligands. Finally, the short distances between the two oxygen atoms of the PA ligands [O(1) O(2): 2.389 Å, O(5) O(6): 2.398 Å] suggest a strong H–O–H bonding .…”

“…31,32 These findings are in line with previous observations of changing the tautomeric forms upon coordination [33][34][35][36] or shifting the equilibrium towards the hydroxyphosphine tautomer using electron deficient P-substituents. 37,38 Complex [AuCl•A] can also be converted into a cationic gold (I) species 9 upon reaction with AgPF 6 characterised by a broad shielded 31 P-NMR resonance at ca. 172 ppm.…”

“…The synthesis of C 2 F 5 PH 2 was claimed by Nixon et al., however, no synthetic protocol or analytical data were given 15. Hydrolysis of C 2 F 5 PX 2 16 or (C 2 F 5 ) 2 POH17 afforded the pentafluoroethylphosphinic acid C 2 F 5 P(O)(OH)H which, however, was not isolated.…”
