Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis: Development of a Microkinetic Model for Metal Catalysis

Show more

“…A generic computer algorithm has been developed at the "Laboratorium voor Petrochemische Techniek" from the Ghent University, initially for the radical chemistry occurring during thermal cracking (Clymans and Froment, 1984;Hillewaert et al, 1988;Willems and Froment, 1988a, b), later for acid catalyzed processes (Baltanas and Froment, 1985;Baltanas et al, 1989;Vynckier and Froment, 1991;Svoboda et al, 1995), and recently extended to metal catalyzed processes (Lozano-Blanco et al, 2006. The algorithm allows generating all reactions, intermediates and products for a given feedstock.…”

“…An upper carbon number is set by the user. Molecules and elementary steps are represented in the program by means of Boolean matrices and standardized labels [9,[46][47][48][49][50]. In the Boolean matrices, the elements represent the existence of a bond between the non-hydrogen atoms in a particular molecule.…”

“…Otherwise, the matrix element is equal to zero. Carbon, oxygen and metal atoms are distinguished by an adjacent column matrix added to the left border of the matrix [9]. The adjacent column was introduced by Vynckier and Froment for components that contain heteroatoms [47].…”

“…For an accurate description of chemical kinetics applicable over a wide range of process conditions and feedstocks, a detailed microkinetic model is required (Froment, 1992). These microkinetic models (Baltanas and Froment, 1985;Chinnick et al, 1988;Hillewaert et al, 1988;Chevalier et al, 1990;DiMaio and Lignola, 1992;Broadbelt et al, 1994;Ranzi et al, 1995;Prickett and Mavrovouniotis, 1997;Warth et al, 2000;Guillaume et al, 2003;Matheu et al, 2003;Buda et al, 2006;Lozano-Blanco et al, 2006) capture the essential chemistry while a manageable size of the reaction network is maintained. Due to the depleting reserves of sweet crude oils and the decreasing demand of heavy fractions as fuel, there is an increasing tendency to use low cost fuels such as heavy gas oils, vacuum gas oils (VGO) or gas condensates as feedstocks in steam cracking (Singh et al, 2005).…”
