Fish assemblages in a coastal bay adjacent to a network of marine protected areas in southern Brazil

Abstract: Baía Norte (North Bay) in Santa Catarina State is considered a typical coastal bay and is surrounded by a network of Marine Protected Areas. The objectives of this study were to describe the composition of the demersal fish assemblage, identify seasonal and spatial structures on a fine scale and evaluate the role of habitat descriptors and abiotic variables affecting the fish assemblage structure. Seasonal samplings were conducted in 2005, using bottom trawls in six pre-established areas in Baía Norte in summe… Show more

“…The research carried out between March/2011 and November/2015 indicates that the richness of the fish species of São Marcos Bay is inferior to those found in other tropical estuaries (Araújo et al, 2008;Paiva et al, 2008;Campos et al, 2010;Santos et al, 2015;Cattani et al, 2016). In addition, studies carried out by Castro (1997Castro ( , 2001 in adjacent regions (Cururuca, Paciência, Estreito, Baías,…”

“…However, spatial and temporal assemblage patterns were not evaluated. Despite the dominance of a few species, which is a remarkable feature in lagoon and estuarine environments due to significant changes in physical and chemical variables (Day et al, 1989), there are differences in abundance between seasons and areas, commonly present in other surveys conducted in shallow areas (Spach et al, 2010;Contente et al, 2011;Vilar et al, 2011;Souza-Conceição et al, 2013;Cartagena et al, 2014;Ribeiro et al, 2014;Soeth et al, 2015;Cattani et al, 2016a). The use of such environments by juveniles, generally zoobenthivorous, is characterized by the availability of food associated with the substrate.…”

“…In south Brazilian coastal areas the seasonal variations of temperature and spatial oscillation of salinity, among other factors, provide intra-and inter-annual variability that is associated with the occurrence of larger scale climatic phenomena (Garcia et al, 2004(Garcia et al, , 2012Moraes et al, 2012;Martins et al, 2015). Temperature plays an important role in seasonal migrations of some species, having a direct effect on the metabolic, reproductive, and abundance processes of the fish fauna (Mont'Alverne et al, 2012;Moraes et al, 2012;Cattani et al, 2016). Thus, recruitment of young fishes determines the composition and the seasonal variations in abundance of shallow-water species (Mont'Alverne et al, 2012;Moraes et al, 2012).…”
