Fish Meal vs. Corn Gluten Meal as a Protein Source for Dry Cat Food.

Abstract: ABSTRACT. To compare the effects of two dietary protein sources, fish meal (FM) and corn gluten meal (CGM), fecal moisture content, nitrogen balance and urinary excretion were examined in adult cats. The dietary protein source did not cause a significant difference in daily food intake, water intake, urine volume, dry matter digestibility or urinary nitrogen excretion, but fecal moisture content was lower (P<0.02) in the CGM group. The HCl-insoluble fraction of urinary sediment tended to be higher in the CGM g… Show more

“…This difference was likely due to the quality of dietary ingredients; however, ingredients were not provided in that study, so this cannot be determined. DM digestibility was similar, however, to studies evaluating fish meal and meat meal as the primary dietary protein sources [Funaba et al, 2001, 2002].…”

“…Nitrogen balance has historically been used to determine nitrogen and amino acid requirements of domestic cats during different life stages [NRC, 2006]. It also has been used as a tool to evaluate various dietary protein sources when fed to cats at maintenance [Funaba et al, 2001, 2002, 2005]. Protein quality can alter apparent nutrient digestibility and nitrogen retention in cats.…”

“…There was no difference (both were 84%) in the protein digestibility of micronized whole soybeans and corn gluten meal in the cat [15]. Protein utilization was not different when corn gluten meal was compared to fish meal [16] and chicken meal in cats [17]. However, meat meal had superior protein utilization when compared to corn gluten meal in cat food [18].…”

“…Em estudo realizado por Funaba et al (2001), comparando o efeito de duas fontes de proteína, farinha de peixe e farinha de glúten de milho, não foi observada diferença significativa entre pH urinário dos grupos (6,11 e 6,14 unidades de pH, respectivamente). Os autores sugerem que as fontes proteicas não irão interferir no efeito de acidificação da urina, corroborando com Skoch et al (1991).…”
