In the first part of this paper we review current knowledge regarding fish scales, focusing on elasmoid scales, the only type found in two model species, the zebrafish and the medaka. After reviewing the structure of scales and their evolutionary origin, we describe the formation of the squamation pattern. The regularity of this process suggests a pre-patterning of the skin before scale initiation. We then summarise the dynamics of scale development on the basis of morphological observations. In the absence of molecular data, these observations support the existence of genetic cascades involved in the control of scale development. In the second part of this paper, we illustrate the potential that scale development offers as a model to study organogenesis mediated by epithelial-mesenchymal interactions. Teleosts are the largest and most diverse group of vertebrates, and many species undergo morphological, physiological, and behavioral transitions, “metamorphoses,” as they progress between morphologically divergent life stages. The larval metamorphosis that generally occurs as teleosts mature from larva to juvenile involves the loss of embryo-specific features, the development of new adult features, major remodeling of different organ systems, and changes in physical proportions and overall phenotype. Yet, in contrast to anuran amphibians, for example, teleost metamorphosis can entail morphological change that is either sudden and profound, or relatively gradual and subtle. Here, we review the definition of metamorphosis in teleosts, the diversity of teleost metamorphic strategies and the transitions they involve, and what is known of their underlying endocrine and genetic bases. We suggest that teleost metamorphosis offers an outstanding opportunity for integrating our understanding of endocrine mechanisms, cellular processes of morphogenesis and differentiation, and the evolution of diverse morphologies and life histories.

“…In the survey of fish pigment cell malignancies other than those appearing in interspecies hybrids of swordtail and platyfish, Dr Ikuo Kimura of Aichi Cancer Center brought us marine teleost, nibe croaker Nibea mitsukurii , which developed irido‐melanophoromas, tumors composed of mixed populations of iridophores and melanophores (28). These tumors were unique in that they assumed more like melanophoromas in the dorsal skins whereas did so iridophoromas in the ventral, suggesting the presence of specific integumental factors of localized distribution that impinged on their phenotypic expression (31). This is a biographical sketch of my research and its related personal episodes with respect to brightly colored pigmentation in lower vertebrates. It includes a brief story of the studies on; (a) pterinosomes as a specific site of pteridine deposition in xanthophores or erythrophores of fish and amphibians, (b) a mosaic phenotype of chromatophores occurring in the reptiles and its implication for their developmental origin and differentiation mechanisms, (c) erythrophoroma as a tumor of erythrophores in goldfish, (d) the pluripotentials of erythrophoroma cells for expression of neural crest-derived characters in vitro, (e) pigment disorders occurring in hatchery-raised flounders and (f) recognition of pigment cell types by murine tyrosinase genes transfected into an orange-colored variant of medaka fish. Some of the personal affairs associated with the history of the Japanese community for pigment cell research were described to illustrate the background of these studies.
