“…Some of these fibroblasts are the precursors of the dermal papilla, i.e., the scale-forming cells, but their precise embryonic origin is still unknown. A neural crest origin of these cells has been suggested based on the observation that fish tumor pigment cells differentiate and form scales in vitro (Matsumoto et al, 1983). The suggested evolutionary origin of scales from dental elements also supports the neural crest origin of the scale-forming cells.…”

“…Collagen fibrils are deposited in orthogonal arrays under the epidermis (Le Guellec, Morvan-Dubois, & Sire, 2004) and the acellular stroma is then invaded by fibroblasts of unknown origin (but potentially originating from the neural crest; Matsumoto et al, 1983). Later, in metamorphosis, these fibroblasts initiate scale formation, potentially regulated by expression of sonic hedgehog among other factors (Sire & Akimenko, 2004).…”

“…9). I was surprised at the press's attitude for events in basic sciences, although Prof. Tchen suggested its possible availability for cancer therapy using induction of differentiation (30, 31, 34). Also, when the International Symposium on Phyletic Approaches to Cancers was held in Tokyo in 1981, I was given enormous opportunities as a participant to meet with most of the world‐wide leading comparative oncologists.…”

“…In the survey of fish pigment cell malignancies other than those appearing in interspecies hybrids of swordtail and platyfish, Dr Ikuo Kimura of Aichi Cancer Center brought us marine teleost, nibe croaker Nibea mitsukurii , which developed irido‐melanophoromas, tumors composed of mixed populations of iridophores and melanophores (28). These tumors were unique in that they assumed more like melanophoromas in the dorsal skins whereas did so iridophoromas in the ventral, suggesting the presence of specific integumental factors of localized distribution that impinged on their phenotypic expression (31). Although we succeeded in in vitro culture of these neoplastic cells, trials to modify their pigment type with the use of known melanogenic factors were unsuccessful.…”
