Fisher behaviour in coastal and marine fisheries

Abstract: This research systematically reviews fisher behaviour in coastal and marine fisheries.Fisher behaviour refers to individual and group level action that reflects the psychological processing and social exchange of information in fisheries. Fisher behaviour is poorly conceptualized and explained in fisheries research, and the implications of fisher behaviour for governance outcomes remain uncertain. To address this gap, we present a systematic scoping review of peer-reviewed literature (n = 104 journal articles … Show more

“…The comprehensiveness of the search was tested by applying the Boolean search string and matching the results with a list of 20 benchmark articles ( S4 Table ) (as suggested by authors such as Livoreil et al [ 10 ]). The list of benchmark articles was drawn from the references given by Andrews et al [ 5 ] and Battista et al [ 4 ]–two highly relevant and related review studies. From these benchmark articles, AMW made an initial selection of 51 relevant articles, who screened the titles for relevance to the primary research question of this study.…”

“…Interventions to change behaviour may be more effective if grounded in appropriate theory (Davis et al, 2015). While there are many behavioural theories, the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) (Ajzen, 1991) is one of the most widely-applied and empirically-tested, including for understanding and encouraging pro-environmental behaviour, but with limited application to marine conservation and fisheries management (Andrews et al, 2021;Davis et al, 2015;St John et al, 2010).…”

“…This issue is ubiquitous throughout coastal areas, and represents a cross-disciplinary challenge for biodiversity conservation, food security and livelihoods. At its core, diagnosing and managing bycatch requires understanding and changing fisher behaviour, yet the use of behavioural sciences to inform marine governance and policy remains limited (Andrews et al, 2021).…”
