Fishers' knowledge on the ecology, impacts and benefits of the non-native peacock bass <i>Cichla kelberi</i> in a coastal river in southeastern Brazil

Abstract: Ethnoichthyology has been used to understand how humans perceive environmental changes, including species introductions. In Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, fishers introduced juveniles of peacock bass Cichla kelberi in the Juturnaíba Reservoir in the 1990's. “…Ethnobiological studies addressing fishers' knowledge have long been recognized as an invaluable source of information, especially in tropical countries lacking research capacity (Johannes 1998).
