Five‐year actual survival after pancreatoduodenectomy for pancreatic head cancer

Abstract: Background: The aim of this study was to analyse retrospectively the long-term results of patients who were operated for adenocarcinoma of the pancreatic head and identify significant prognostic factors. Methods: Eighty patients who were surgically treated for adenocarcinoma of the pancreatic head between 1995 and 2006 met the inclusion criteria and were subject to retrospective analysis. Possible prognostic factors were evaluated and independent predictors of survival were determined. Results: A classic Whipp… Show more

“…Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the most dismal malignancies with an overall 5-year survival rate of < 7% [ 1 , 2 ]. Despite enormous efforts directed at the treatment of PDAC, radical resection remains the most effective treatment modality, and it increases the 5-year survival rate for PDAC patients to 10–25% [ 3 – 5 ]. However, due to a lack of presentations at early stages and the aggressive nature of this disease, the majority of PDAC patients present an unresectable disease at the time of diagnosis, and only around 20% of newly diagnosed PDAC patients were suitable candidates for curable surgical resection [ 6 ].…”

“…fr) shows that approximate 400,000 people died from pancreatic cancer each year, ranking the seventh leading causes of cancer death [1]. The overall five-year survival rate of pancreatic cancer is far below 10% and the lowest of almost all types of cancers [2]. Surgery is considered to be the only potential treatment, followed by adjuvant chemotherapy.…”

“…However, pancreatic cancer is not sensitive to most of the current chemotherapeutic drugs [3]. Over 80% of patients with pancreatic cancer are diagnosed when the lesion is not suitable for operation [2]. Therefore, it is urgent to develop an effective drug with less toxic and side effects to treat patients with pancreatic cancer.…”

“…Surgery is the only curative modality if R0 resection is feasible. Unfortunately, even in that group of patients, the 5-year survival rate is about 14%, with a median survival duration of 24 months 45 . In many institutions, the most common treatment today is either chemotherapy alone or combined with chemoradiation.…”
