Fixation-related EEG frequency band power analysis

Abstract: During the last decade the combined recording of eye-tracking data and electroencephalographic (EEG) data has led to the methodology of fixation-related potentials analysis (FRP). This methodology has been increasingly and successfully used to study EEG correlates in the time domain (i.e., event-related potentials, ERPs) of cognitive processing in free viewing situations like text reading or natural scene perception. Basically, fixation-onset serves as time-locking event for epoching and analysing the EEG dat… Show more

“…Especially promising in research on instructional (multimedia) material is the combined analysis of EEG and eyetracking data, that is, using the eye-tracking data to analyze the EEG frequency band power in relation to fixations on certain AOIs (Baccino, 2011;Dimigen et al, 2011;Ossandon et al, 2010;Scharinger, 2018;Scharinger et al, 2020). In classical, stimulus-locked EEG data analyses, EEG frequency band power is calculated for data epochs (i.e., time windows) linked to the onset of the stimuli (e.g., the start of the entire text or the beginning of each paragraph or otherwise defined time window in multimedia text materials).…”

“…Therefore, future research, which for example records and evaluates interactions in the VR environments, is needed as a feasible step to disentangle these effects. Furthermore, a next interesting step would be to investigate which brain areas are increasingly activated during the different interaction formats for learners with different amounts of visuospatial ability by means of electroencephalography (EEG, e.g., Scharinger, 2018) or by means of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS, non-intrusive method of optical imaging, e.g., Brucker et al, 2015) to shed light onto the moderating role of learners' visuospatial ability during learning in VR environments.…”
