Disposal of chitin wastes from crustacean shell can cause environmental and health hazards. Chitin is a well known abundant natural polymer extracted after deproteinization and demineralization of the shell wastes of shrimp, crab, lobster, and krill. Extraction of chitin and its derivatives from waste material is one of the alternative ways to turn the waste into useful products. Chitinases are enzymes that degrade chitin. Chitinases contribute to the generation of carbon and nitrogen in the ecosystem. Chitin and chitinolytic enzymes are gaining importance for their biotechnological applications. The presence of surface charge and multiple functional groups make chitin as a beneficial natural polymer. Due to the reactive functional groups chitin can be used for the preparation of a spectrum of chitin derivatives such as chitosan, alkyl chitin, sulfated chitin, dibutyryl chitin and carboxymethyl chitin for specific applications in different areas. The present review is aimed to summarize the efficacy of the chitinases on the chitin and its derivatives and their diverse applications in biomedical and environmental field. Further this review also discusses the synthesis of various chitin derivatives in detail and brings out the importance of chitin and its derivatives in biomedical and environmental applications.

Sand Transport and Deposition Behaviour in Subsea Pipelines for Flow Assurance

Sand transport through tubing and pipeline could cause a series of problems to flow assurance, if not properly managed or controlled. The most serious problem is the accumulation and erosion in multiphase flow pipelines and the surface equipment. Therefore, the importance of understanding the transport and deposition behaviour of sands through multiphase flow pipelines cannot be overemphasized. This study presents the sand transport and deposition characteristics in the complicated multiphase flow pipeline. The numerical result shows that the slurry velocity presents a uniform distribution in the multiphase flow pipeline at the sand concentration of 5% and the sand diameter of 50 µm. However, the slurry velocity at the bottom of the pipeline is significantly smaller than that at the top when the sand concentration and diameter reach 30% and 300 µm, respectively. It indicates that the sand deposition at the bottom of the pipe declines the slurry velocity and transport capacity. The deposition thickness is approximately 10% of the pipe diameter even at the low concentration of 5% sand with a small sand diameter of 50 µm and a high slurry velocity of 1.8 m/s. The sand deposition reaches about 30% of the pipe diameter at the same low concentration and high slurry velocity when the sand diameter increases to 300 μm.

The potential of a chitosan/polyurethane foam (CTS/PU) fixed‐bed column for the removal of Allura Red dye (AR) from aqueous solutions was evaluated. Breakthrough curves were constructed under different conditions and optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). The empirical models Thomas, Yoon‐Nelson, and Bed Depth Service Time (BDST) were fitted to the experimental data. The dynamic models of Yoon‐Nelson and BDST accurately fitted the experimental data. As a result, CTS/PU can be successfully applied in a fixed‐bed adsorption operation to remove AR dye.
