Fixed drug eruption induced by topical olopatadine ophthalmic solution

Abstract: Fixed drug eruption (FDE) usually develops after oral administration and is described as a cutaneous reaction recurring at the same location each time the drug is taken. Olopatadine is both a H1 histamine receptor antagonist and a mast cell stabilizer, indicated for the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis. Here, we report a 14-year-old male patient who developed FDE localised on the lateral side of periorbital rim bilaterally, whilst applying olopatadine 0.1% ophthalmic solution for the treatment of allergic … Show more

“…FDE is typically associated with the consumption of oral medication. To date, there have been few reported cases associated with topical agents: plaster with Chinese herbs, 6 intravaginal metronidazole ovules, 7 analgesic plaster containing piroxicam, 8 olopatadine ophthalmic solution 9 and phenobarbital‐containing suppositories 10 . This demonstrates that FDE can appear after exposure to topical medications but high individual sensitivity is probably necessary.…”

“…Generalised FDE in a 56‐year‐old Korean man was caused by an analgesic plaster containing piroxicam, whereas intravaginal metronidazole ovules induced GBFDE in a 35‐year‐old Argentine woman 3,4 . A 14‐year‐old Turkish male patient presented with FDE localised on the lateral side of his periorbital rims after applying olopatadine 0.1% ophthalmic solution 5 . In addition, two Turkish children were presented with FDE after application of phenobarbital‐containing suppositories 6 …”

“…He also avoided using the Visine eye‐drops and had no further recurrences on follow up. Bilgili and colleagues reported a case of a 14‐year‐old boy who developed erythema localised bilaterally to the lateral periorbital rim . This occurred following use of 0.1% olopatadine (anti‐histamine) eye‐drops to treat allergic conjunctivitis.…”
