Fixed Drug Eruption to Ingested Propolis

Abstract: Fixed drug eruptions (FDEs) are a unique type of drug allergy in which skin lesions recur in the same location after each ingestion of the offending agent. More than 100 drugs have been implicated in causing FDEs. More recently, herbal medications and food additives have been implicated. Propolis is an important contact allergen, but has not previously been reported to cause FDE. We present the case of a patient with a 1-year history of a recurrent lesion on the shaft of his penis. He tested strongly positive … Show more

“…FDEs are almost always associated with new medication. However, a small body of literature describes FDE with confirmed non-medication sources [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ]. These sources are either food or chemical additives found in food, leading to the proposition of the term ‘fixed food eruption’ to describe this subset of localized hypersensitivity reaction [ 7 ].…”

“…In addition to allergic contact dermatitis, there are also reported cases of systemic reactions or fixed drug eruptions after propolis ingestion. To our knowledge, a case of propolis‐induced erythema multiforme‐like contact dermatitis has hitherto not been described.…”
