Flame-retardant activity of modified boron nitride nanosheets to cotton

Abstract: Boron nitride nanosheets (BNN) were prepared by molten hydroxide-assisted liquid exfoliation from hexagonal boron nitride powder with an effectively high yield, and then modified with hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) to obtain HCCP-BNN. The series of samples were applied to prepare flame-retardant cotton fabrics with the impregnation-drying method, and successful treatment was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. The combustion performance of the as-prepared cotton fabrics was tested and evaluated. A… Show more

“…However, the lip–lip interaction [ 32 ] between the B atom and N atom in adjacent layers of h-BN has a poor interfacial interaction with polymer matrices, which seriously affects the flame retardant efficiency of BN and deteriorates the mechanical properties of polymer nanocomposites. To overcome these shortcomings, it is necessary to functionalize the surface of the h-BN [ 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 ].…”

“…Cotton is one of the traditional natural cellulose materials and is widely used in apparel, home decoration and military defence because of its warmth, softness, breathability and excellent biodegradability. [1][2][3] Unfortunately, the limited oxygen index (LOI) value of cotton is only about 18%. 4 Therefore, it is easy to burn when exposed to flame, which not only seriously endangers people's lives and property safety, but also greatly limits its application in many aspects.…”

“…This can not only improve the additional value of cotton textiles, but also meet people's demand for functional textiles. 6,7 Hence, it is of great importance to improve the flame retardance of cotton fabric (see Figure 1).…”

“…Cotton fibers are one of the environmentally friendly natural cellulose fibers and are extensively used in the textile industry because of their excellent hygroscopicity, biodegradability, comfort and so on. 1 Unfortunately, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of cotton is only about 18%. It ignites easily under the air condition to cause fire disasters, which not only seriously endangers people's lives and safety but also limits its application in many aspects.…”

“…Generally, some flame retardant technologies, such as impregnation, 5,6 layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly 7,8 and sol–gel, 9 are suitable for flame retardant modification of cotton fabric. The impregnation method refers to the method of soaking fabric in the flame retardant solution and then producing flame retardant fabric through squeezing, drying, baking and other processes.…”
