flapAssist: How the integration of VR and visualization tools fosters the factory planning process

Abstract: Virtual Reality (VR) systems are of growing importance to aid decision support in the context of the digital factory, especially factory layout planning. While current solutions either focus on virtual walkthroughs or the visualization of more abstract information, a solution that provides both, does currently not exist. To close this gap, we present a holistic VR application, called Factory Layout Planning Assistant (flapAssist). It is meant to serve as a platform for planning the layout of factories, while a… Show more

“…With a focus on VR technology, in the paper by Berg et al [11], the authors made a survey amongst 25 industrial companies on the use of VR in their processes. They listed different use cases where VR technology was used in practice: visibility/viewability [12,13], ergonomics/reachability [14], packaging, aesthetic quality/craftsmanship (visual inspection), storytelling, abstract data visualization (e.g., airflow simulations) and for communication across disciplines.…”

“…For instance, Gebhardt et al . [GPV*15] suggest a factory planning tool that provides an editable overview of the factory layout on a tabletop display. Changes in the layout can instantly be observed during a walkthrough of the 3D representation of the factory layout within the CAVE.…”

“…Another application field of VR besides the design review of machines, is factory layout planning. One example is [6], where the researchers create a system to plan layouts in 2D and 3D as well as in VR. There have also been several trails to enable collaboration in VR.…”
