Inspired by previous studies research gap findings and limitations in management system functions to produce sustainabilityrelated reporting authors set a goal to map the current academic literature in the context of waste management systems. The method chosen for the work was a systematic literature review, focusing on the Web of Science and Scopus databases. The authors found a total of 115 unique publications from the selected databases, which were filtered 28 contributing studies. With these studies, this study found that most of the publications are journals and almost half of the work has been published in the last 3 years. Additionally, sustainability and waste management reporting related literature seem to enjoy wide appreciation among the peers, indicated by a high number of references these publications had gathered. As an overall finding, the specific research area of waste management process quantified data reporting seems really young overall and needs additional research with multiple research gaps clearly waiting for follow-up research to pinpoint the specific areas to contribute in the near future.

“…On another hand, the flue gas scrubber system providers should put a lot of effort on transforming their asset-based business model to include digitalized services [23] that transform the performance gains the unit provides, to factual data which is provided to customers in clear form reports and easily to be read KPI (Key Performance Indicators) measurements. This should be followed by fleet level thinking, collecting this asset-based data from all unit around the world and start to enhance the efficiency of units by managing them like a fleet if units (more efficient spare part handling, global knowledge base for enhancing implementation and "in use" efficiency and so on) [33,34]. And it would make a lot of sense in nowadays digitalization times to apply the enormous potential of AI platforms to this fleet to improve the design of these flue gas scrubber units in future, based on global level fleet data analysis [35] and by so doing enhancing both the circularity of these units and the on use time efficiency which deduces the environmental impact of the CHP energy factories, where these are implemented into.…”

Technologies for reducing emissions and costs in combined heat and power production

According Finnish Energy association, in Finland roughly three-quarters of district heat production is based on combined heat and power (CHP) generation. Correspondingly, one-third of electricity is generated using CHP. In Finland, the market share of CHP derived electricity is significant, and therefore used technologies and fuels should be carefully chosen in terms of costs and emissions. In this paper we consider a case of Kuopio, which is the 9th biggest city in Finland. In the past few years, the total usage of fossil fuels has been decreasing and the use of renewable fuels has correspondingly been increasing. The amount of electricity produced with peat has gradually decreased during the last 15 years. The common explaining factor for these trends is the political will and national and municipal level shared common aim to reduce greenhouse gases and emissions. Furthermore, there are new technical innovations available, such as flue gas scrubber and district cooling system, which has been proven to be significant tools to reduce emission and at the same time investments into these innovations have been shown to save energy and money, meaning being greener has been also financially lucrative decision for these sustainability enhancing technology investors.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to design a framework for asset data management in power companies. The authors consider asset data management from a strategic perspective, linking operational-level data with corporate strategy and taking into account the organizational context and stakeholder expectations.Design/methodology/approachThe authors conducted a multiple case study based on a literature review and three series of in-depth interviews with experts from three Russian electric power companies.FindingsThe main challenge in asset data management for electric power companies is the increasing amount and complexity of asset data, which is frequently incomplete or inaccurately collected, hard to translate to managerial language, focused primarily on the operational level. Such fragmented approach negatively affects strategic decision-making. The proposed framework introduces a holistic approach, provides context and accountability for decision-making and attributes data flows, roles and responsibilities to different management levels.Research limitations/implicationsThe limitations of our study lie in the exploratory nature of case study research and limited generalization of the observed cases. However, the authors used multiple sources of evidence to ensure validity and generalization of the results. This article is a first step toward further understanding of the issues of transformation in power companies and other asset intensive businesses.Originality/valueThe novelty of the framework lies in the scope, focus and detailed treatment of asset data management in electric power companies.
