Flexibility and Ecological Planning: Gregory Bateson on Urbanism

Abstract: Gregory Bateson studies dolphins at Sea Life Park, Hawaii, 1965Bateson argued that learning was an inherent property of healthy ecological systems.Does ecological design create a holistic shift in thinking? Jon Goodbun suggests it does. He takes the lead from systems theorist Gregory Bateson, who argued that an 'ecological aesthetic' was required to understand how complex systems like cities behave. Goodbun explains how, with this new approach, it is flexibility rather than efficiency that becomes a priority.

“…Man's control of nature is considered problematic as it is representative of the subjugation (Scott 2016;Rawes & Spencer 2017), and has contributed to planetary health challenges such as natural resource depletion, biopiracy and changing disease patterns (Patrick 2019). These patriarchal modes of thinking have resulted in assumptions that there are 'technical fixes' to these challenges, and that the efficient distribution of resources is the answer (Bateson 1972;Goodbun 2012). Critical perspectives on justice and the capability approach offer compelling arguments (Shi et al 2016) for ecologically just design, which is conceived of a complex, open, system that creates space for 'slow change' and a complex, planetary, socioecological system (Goodbun 2012).…”

“…78 Gregory Bateson 'considered that ecosystems had to be considered to be communicating and informational systems' and 'emphasised that to properly understand ecosystems, we need to find ways to think ecologically, recognising ourselves as a part of the system being observed or interacted with'. 79 Liverpool ONE is an immature ecosystem and as such dissipates energy quickly, poorly and inefficiently and is less diverse than mature ecosystems. I don't simply mean this because it is an urban environment lacking flora and fauna as I believe many urban environments are very diverse (not simply 'bio'-diverse) and many (mono-cultural) rural environments are homogenised.…”

“…Environmental issues emerge through the inclusion of "ecology" in architectural education. Terms such as performance ecology, ecological based concept, ecology and sustainability increasingly appear as themes and core subjects in architectural design studio (Goodbun, 2012). But in general ecology tend to be directly related to sustainability (Catalá, 2010) that implies a rather technical and qualitative point of view.…”
