Flexible Aircraft Simulation Validation with Flight Test Data

Abstract: The challenges of modeling flexible aircraft include appropriate fidelity capturing and validation with experimental data. In fact, the validation of formulations and models for the flexible flight dynamics is indispensable to ensure that all the important phenomena are correctly captured. With this objective, two high-aspect-ratio flexible aircraft have been flight-tested, and coupled aeroelastic–flight dynamics data have been collected to support model validation. Additional ground vibration and static tests… Show more

“…Addittionally, Michigan X-HALE [3,5] and ITA X-HALE [11,12], very-flexible-wing aircraft, with 4m, 6m and 8mwing-span versions, remotely piloted were developed and built to validate structural models and flight dynamics formulations. Guimarães et al [13] performed flight tests to validate these models. Perroni and Bussamra [15] proposed different structural layouts for X-HALE and compared the numerical predictions from linear and nonlinear structural analyses.…”

“…Simulations and flight tests have been conducted to verify the feasibility of compound aircraft consisting of two and three identical unit aircraft, although detailed dynamic characteristics have not been determined. Detailed flight dynamics analysis and flight testing are mainly available for highly flexible aircraft, and are largely absent for compound aircraft [14][15][16]. The current research on the dynamics of compound aircraft is limited by the fact that most studies are numerical and focused on specific vehicles.…”
