Flexible Emotion Regulation: How Situational Demands and Individual Differences Influence the Effectiveness of Regulatory Strategies

Abstract: The number of studies and theoretical contributions on emotion regulation has grown rapidly. In this article we describe the concept of flexible emotion regulation. We argue that the effectiveness of specific emotion regulation strategies depends on the interaction of the features of a situation and personality characteristics of the individual regulating his/her emotions. We review a few recent theoretical contributions and studies that have attempted to capture some aspects of the flexibility of emotion regu… Show more

“…Findings from this empirical study reveal that achievement emotions in fact have a linear, predictive relationship with the type of coping strategies applied, and ultimately, with the resulting motivational state. This linear relationship, however, seems to be influenced by the specific situation and by interaction with this situation, as shown in recent research [76,77]. Consequently, we must continue to investigate how the person x situation interaction is produced, in order to reach a better understanding of emotions during academic learning at university.…”

“…To sum up, the impact of emotion regulation abilities on the course of psoriasis seems crucial: patients' well-being is negatively associated with suppression and is positively associated with reappraisal. Suppression and rumination are indeed more strongly linked to psychopathological outcomes than reappraisal and acceptance strategies (Kobylińska and Kusev, 2019). To our knowledge, there are no studies exploring the employment of acceptance strategies in psoriasis.…”

“…Neuroticism has also been shown to be negatively related to psychological flexibility, while Conscientiousness showed a positive association with flexibility (Latzman & Masuda, 2013). However, no study so far focused on individual differences in the flexible implementation of different emotion regulation strategies and its interaction with personality dispositions (Kobylinska & Kusev, 2019).…”
