Flexible Generation of E-Learning Exams inR:MoodleQuizzes,OLATAssessments, and Beyond

Abstract: The capabilities of the package exams for automatic generation of (statistical) exams in R are extended by adding support for learning management systems: As in earlier versions of the package exam generation is still based on separate Sweave files for each exercisebut rather than just producing different types of PDF output files, the package can now render the same exercises into a wide variety of output formats. These include HTML (with various options for displaying mathematical content) and XML specificat… Show more

“…Some of them adopted the format of a practical case, presented to the students at the beginning of the activity, followed by a series of questions and tasks related to the experiment. Those activities were developed in R with package exams (Grün & Zeileis, 2009;Zeileis, Umlauf, & Leisch, 2014), which facilitates the creation and maintenance of large-scale exams in statistics courses in PDF, HTML or e-learning questionnaires in Moodle or other VLEs. Those activities were randomly generated and automatically assessed in Moodle.…”

“…Computerized adaptive test comprises all assessment processes where ICT (Information and Communications Technology) is used for the presentation of assessment material and the recording of responses [1]. Assessment is commonly offered in learning platform or LCMSs (Learning Content Management Systems), web or computer based applications designed to manage educational and assessment content [10].…”

“…Another approach is connected with the R package exams for the automatic generation of examination exercises, see Grün and Zeileis (2009), Zeileis, Umlauf and Leisch (2014). In contrast to our approach, the idea of these authors is to mix parts of R script for computations and LaTeX document parts to design the exercises.…”
