Flexible Hardware-Based Stereo Matching

Abstract: To enable adaptive stereo vision for hardware-based embedded stereo vision systems, we propose a novel technique for implementing a flexible block size, disparity range, and frame rate. By reusing existing resources of a static architecture, rather than dynamic reconfiguration, our technique is compatible with application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) as well as field programmable gate array (FPGA) implementations. We present the corresponding block diagrams and their implementation in our hardware-based … Show more

“…The intensity difference between both blocks is measured by several methods such as sum of absolute difference (SAD), mean-squared error (MSE), and least square error (LSE). In our present work, we have used the SAD measure as the minimum distance computation metric because this measure needs less hardware compared to other distortion measurement methods [2]. Compression is achieved when a larger part of image is represented by a smaller part of image.…”

“…Woodfill et al [37] described an ASIC design called DeepSea which enables the processing of 512 × 480 at a disparity range of 52 pixels, a block size of 7 × 7, and a high frame rate of 200 fps. The technique for implementing a flexible block size, disparity range and frame rate was proposed in [38]. The impact of using different similarity measures as SAD, rank, and census transform was also presented.…”

“…In all the considered works [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] the optical scheme of stereoscopic system which is the basis of the geometric scheme construction was not studied. For example, in works [1][2][3][4][5] the geometric model of simple stereoscopic system provided by space coordinate calculation formulas is presented.…”

“…For example, in works [1][2][3][4][5] the geometric model of simple stereoscopic system provided by space coordinate calculation formulas is presented. However, these formulas are given only in geometric form without using optical scheme, their pixel interpretation is not provided, and there is no substantia-tion of the geometric scheme construction.…”
