DOI: 10.1007/s00779-009-0228-5 AbstractThis paper introduces a novel Web architecture that supports session migration in multi-device Web applications, particularly the case when a user starts a Web session on a computer and wishes to continue on a mobile phone. The proposed solution for transferring the needed session identifiers across devices is to dynamically generate pictures of 2D-barcodes containing a Web address and a session ID in an encoded form. 2D-barcodes are a cheap, fast and robust approach to the problem. They are widely known and used in Japan, and are spreading in other countries. Variations on the topic are covered in the article, including a possible migration from a mobile device to a computer (opposite direction), and between two or more mobile phones (possibly back and forth). The results show that this HCI approach is inexpensive, efficient, and works with most camera-phones on the market; the author does see any other mature technique with such assets.

As users interact with more and more computing devices in daily life, there is strong needfor the ability to move active sessions from one device to anotherwhich is called session mobility. However, due to the complexity and range of devices in use today, providing such a solution poses significant challenges and many existing approaches fail to recognise this diversity among devices andplatforms. We present our approach to session mobility which enables the mobility ofplatform independent legacy applications in an adaptive manner across a wide range of devices from the desktop computer to the smartphone. Providing such interaction continuity can help alleviate the cumbersome task of manually reinstating sessions on each device encountered, as well as enabling device integration and information centralisation. We discuss the design and implementation issues associated with our system, as well as presenting our test results in comparison to similar approaches to session mobility, thereby demonstrating the advantages ofour approach.

This paper aims to provide a discussion of how model-based approaches and related tools have been used to address important issues for obtaining usable interactive software and the new challenges for this research area. The paper provides an analysis of the logical descriptions that can be used in the design of interactive systems and how they can be manipulated in order to obtain useful results. This type of approach has recently raised further interest in the ubiquitous computing field for supporting the design of multi-device interfaces. The new challenges currently considered are mainly in the area of end-user development, ambient intelligence, and multimodal interfaces. q
