Flight Evaluation of the New Handling Qualities Criteria Using the BO 105

Abstract: The Aeronautical Design Standard ADS-33C is a proposed US Army/Navy handling qualities speeification for rotorcraft. The DLR a t Braunscbweig has condueted a partial evaluation of the quantitative fonvard flight criteria of the ADS-33C by flight testing an unaugmented BO 105 helicopter. This paper describes the night test and evaluation methods used to obtain the oarameters needed for determinine handline aualities levels. Aonlieahilitv and reoeatahilitv of the criteria are -0 .. . also discussed. Handling qua… Show more

“…II. The BO-105, whose flight dynamics model forms the basis of simulation in this research, is known to possess poor HQ for precision maneuvering tasks [61] [62]. Therefore, it becomes essential to augment the bare-airframe dynamics and simplify the helicopter's responses for the shipboard landing task.…”

“…Recent works on the investigation of flight control and handling qualities of helicopter invariably consider ADS-33 as guidelines (Padfield, 1996;Pavel and Padfield, 2002;Rysdyk and Calise, 1998;Walker, 2003). The estimation of the new handling qualities criteria in flight has been carried out on the BO105 helicopter (Ockier, 1996).…”

“…The Handling Qualities Requirements for Military Rotorcraft: Aeronautical Design Standard 33 (ADS-33)d) is formally a US Army standard for the RAH-66 helicopter but, having been developed from international collaboration, it has acquired a more general applicability (2,3). An innovative part of these requirements is the assessment of the overall handling qualities of a helicopter by its performance and handling characteristics in a set of standard manoeuvres.…”
