Flight Results of the NF-15B Intelligent Flight Control System (IFCS) Aircraft with Adaptation to a Longitudinally Destabilized Plant

Abstract: Adaptive flight control systems have the potential to be resilient to extreme changes in airplane behavior. Extreme changes could be a result of a system failure or of damage to the airplane. The goal for the adaptive system is to provide an increase in survivability in the event that these extreme changes occur. A direct adaptive neural-network-based flight control system was developed for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration NF-15B Intelligent Flight Control System airplane. The adaptive element… Show more

“…In [30,31,37,38,39] a controller using NDI in combination with NN is designed and (limited) flight tested on a tailless fighter aircraft under the USAF RESTORE program and on the unmanned X-36 ( Figure 1.4(a)). NDI with NN was also used on the F-15 ACTIVE ( Figure 1.4(b)) under the intelligent flight control system program of the NASA [21,22]. A Boeing 747 fitted with a NDI controller combined with RLS for the online model identification was successfully tested in a moving base simulator [131,132,133].…”

“…This architecture is designed specifically to be a baseline controller upon which advanced control elements can be easily added. This architecture will enable further control research into adaptive controls [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10] and the control of flexible structures. 11,12 This baseline control law is a first step toward building a working environment in which design changes and new research objectives can be quickly brought to flight and their real behavior ascertained.…”
