Flight structures fundamental research trends and directions

Abstract: The paper presents an overview of the fundamental research performed in the US in the field of flight structures under the sponsorship of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR). After presenting a general overview of AFOSR, the paper focuses on the structural mechanics program. Three large applications areas are considered: (a) future flight structures; (b) structural sustainment; (c) structural dynamics and vibration control. These three broad areas are covered at various levels of complexity and… Show more

“…The significance of exergy analysis research is shown by Giurgiutiu [52] who cites Moorhouse and his collaborators at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) studies into exergy-based multidisciplinary design as one of eight fundamental research projects for future flight structures. One of critical outputs from Moorhouse's work is the suggestion of changing the "analysis/design paradigm from energy-based to exergy-based (specifically, minimum exergy destruction).…”

“…From 2001 to 2009, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research funded research with the task; exergy based methods for aerospace vehicle design [52]. Camberos and Moorhouse have summarised much of this US Department of Defense funded research in Exergy Analysis and Design Optimization for Aerospace Vehicles and Systems [31].…”
