Floating Car Data Adaptive Traffic Signals: A Description of the First Real-Time Experiment with “Connected” Vehicles

Abstract: The future of traffic management will be based on “connected” and “autonomous” vehicles. With connected vehicles it is possible to gather real-time information. The main potential application of this information is in real-time adaptive traffic signal control. Despite the feasibility of using Floating Car Data (FCD), for signal control, there have been practically no real experiments with all “connected” vehicles to regulate traffic signals in real-time. Most of the research in this field has been carried out … Show more

“…The data comes from the so-called "connected vehicles" in the form of records, the main content of which is the time stamp and coordinates of the location of the vehicle. In Astarita et al (2020), not only the experience of the practical application of a traffic management system based on the FCD method is reported, but also the process of developing and debugging the corresponding software, in which simulation and emulation were used, is described in detail. At all stages of this project, experiments were carried out on the basis of the TRITONE software platform, specially developed for the purposes of simulation and emulation.…”

“…The work explained in [25] shows a case study carried out in Ankara where 1-min interval FCD let authors to transform average speed values into qualitative 4-scale state parameter based on the Level of Service and identify bottlenecks. The connected vehicles gain special importance in [26] to regular in real time the traffic signals and in [30] demonstrates how the combined use of data from idle and active devices improves congestion detection performance in terms of coverage, accuracy, and timeliness. The authors apply a new method to real mobile signaling data obtained from an operational network and present an extensive validation study based on ground-truth obtained from a rich set of reference datasets.…”

“…Another important application of ITS using FCD is related to traffic signal settings. Astarita et al [338][339][340] deeply studied different adaptive signal settings approaches for real-time applications through the joint use of detectors and data coming from vehicles. A review of methods and technologies for signal settings optimization is presented in [341].…”
