Series of reconstructed historical floods are valuable sources of proxy data that can be utilized for the study of flooding fluctuations in the pre-instrumental period. In this work, the severity and frequency of historical flood events in different Spanish rivers are analysed using documentary evidence. The occurrence of floods in the past is analysed bearing in mind the basic topographical and hydrological characteristics of the rivers investigated, as well as the climatological causes of their flooding during the instrumental period. Flood frequency oscillations identified in the present work coincide in general terms with already detected oscillations in previous research for shorter number of chronologies. Analysis for events covering more than two basins shows a relatively small number of cases. Meanwhile, as the climatic context produces simultaneous increases in frequency, geographical characteristics provoke a limitation on the extension of flood impacts during every severe weather event.Key words climatology; documentary data; flood frequency; floods; Spain Etude des crues historiques des rivières espagnoles à l'aide de données documentairesRésumé Les séries de crues reconstituées sont de précieuses sources de données analogues qui peuvent être utilisées pour l'étude des fluctuations de la fréquence des crues au cours de la période pré-instrumentale. Dans ce travail, la sévérité et la fréquence des crues historiques de différentes rivières espagnoles ont été étudiées sur la base de preuves documentaires. La fréquence des crues du passé a été analysée en gardant à l'esprit les principales caractéristiques topographiques et hydrologiques des rivières étudiées, de même que les causes climatologiques de leurs crues au cours de la période instrumentale. Les oscillations de la fréquence des crues identifiées dans ce travail coïncident en gros avec les oscillations détectées dans les recherches antérieures portant sur un nombre de chronologies plus restreint. Les analyses d'évènements intéressant plus de deux bassins sont relativement rares. En attendant, alors que le contexte climatique conduit à une augmentation simultanée des fréquences, les caractéristiques géographiques limitent l'extension des impacts des crues au cours de chaque épisode météorologique sévère.

Abstract. In this paper we use a multi-hazard approach to analyse the 9 September 2010 flash flood in the Dragone basin, a 9 km 2 catchment located along the Amalfi rocky coastal range, southern Italy. In this area, alluvial fan flooding has been the most frequent and destructive geologic hazard since Roman times. Sudden torrents of water (flash floods) are caused by high-intensity and very localized cloudbursts of short duration, inducing slope erosion and sediment delivery from slope to stream. The elevated bed load transport produces fast-moving hyperconcentrated flows with significant catastrophic implications for communities living at the stream mouth.The 9 September 2010 rainstorm event lasted 1 h with an intensity rainfall peak of nearly 120 mm h −1 . High topographic relief of the Amalfi coastal range and positive anomalies of the coastal waters conditioned the character of the convective system. Based on geological data and post-event field evidence and surveys, as well as homemade videos and eyewitness accounts, it is reported that the flash flood mobilized some 25 000 m 3 of materials with a total (water and sediment) peak flow of 80 m 3 s −1 . The estimated peak discharge of only clear water was about 65 m 3 s −1 . This leads to a sediment bulking factor of 1.2 that corresponds to a flow with velocities similar to those of water during a flood.
