“…In addition, invasive alien plants such as Solidago altissima often dominate dry fields and displace native plants (Okubo and Maenaka, 1995;Yamaguchi et al, 1998). Aquatic insects have also lost larval-stage habitats.…”

“…Laborsaving measures such as plot consolidation and artificial ridge covering using ground cover plants or plastic sheets for weed control can be adopted in order to encourage farmers not to abandon paddies. As a consequence of the improvement of socio-economic conditions in rural areas, drastic changes occurred in the agricultural ecosystem, resulting in a rapid decrease of biodiversity and rare species (Sakoda and Takeda 1998;Yamaguchi et al 1998;Ito et al 1999;Arita and Kobayashi 2000;Matsumura 2002;Okubo 2002).…”

“…Most farmers mow (and sometimes burn) tree and shrub seedlings and herbs (including grasses) one to six times a year to control pathogen/insect attacks on crops (Seo and Kido 2000), thus maintaining seminatural grassland conditions (Appendix A). Recent land-use changes (both paddy abandonment and consolidation) have caused a rapid decline in the grassland plant diversity of satokusachi vegetation throughout Japan (Yamaguchi et al 1998, Fukamachi et al 2005, Matsumura and Takeda 2010, Uematsu et al 2010). As of 2005, a total of 386 000 ha of cultivated land had been abandoned in Japan (about 10% of the total cultivated land area [Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries 2005]), and most abandoned fields were concentrated in paddy terraces because of their low accessibility and low productivity (Uematsu et al 2010).…”
