“…The steppe is mainly dominated by Irano-Turanian elements (e.g. Klein, 1991Klein, , 2001Noroozi et al, 2008;Tu¨rkmen et al, 2005;Zohary, 1973). In contrast, within the wetlands, a majority of species are associated with more than one phytogeographic region (sensu Takhtajan, 1986;Zohary, 1973).…”

“…Although these dams have brought economic benefits [50][51][52], they have had a dramatic impact in terms of population displacement [6,53,54], environmental damage [11,55] and conflictuality, as a result of the tensions arisen between Turkey, Syria and Iraq [56][57][58][59]. While these issues have drawn attention and received ample coverage, both public bodies and the academic world have displayed a low concern for the threat posed to cultural heritage along this crucial waterway [22,33,52] if compared with the damage caused.…”

“…Furthermore, the building of dams involves the dislocation of thousands of people, potential political international issues when they are built on rivers flowing through different countries, permanent loss of soil fertility and widespread destruction of cultural and natural heritage. The literature on the prices paid for the construction of dams is growing, particularly that concerning socio-economic issues such as population displacement [6][7][8][9], environmental issues [6,[10][11][12][13] and geopolitical issues [14][15][16]. However, cultural heritage has remained marginal within this debate [17]; even recent multi-disciplinary models for evaluating the costs/benefits of dam construction [18,19] have not included it among the variables considered.…”
