Floristic characterization of an Atlantic Rainforest remnant in Southern Sergipe: Crasto forest

Abstract: The state of Sergipe has suffered extreme reduction of its Atlantic Forest area in the last decades. The objective of this study is to present an inventory of the Mata do Crasto flora, the largest Atlantic Forest Remnant in Sergipe (approximately 1,000 ha), located in the Municipality of Santa Luzia do Itanhy. An intensive survey was undertaken with monthly plant collections in the study area, for four years (1995 to 1999). Additionally, collections deposited in herbaria were consulted to complete the species … Show more

“…The families with greater richness of species found at the Ibura National Forest (Fabaceae, Myrtaceae, Rubiaceae, Asteraceae and Euphorbiaceae) are similar to those found in other surveys conducted in the Atlantic Forest of the state of Sergipe (VICENTE et al, 2005;SANTOS, 2011;MENDES;GOMES;ALVEZ, 2010;SOUZA-ALVES et al, 2014;LANDIM et al, 2015). The Ibura National Forest is also distinguished by the high species richness of native and endemic species in the state, even within a smaller area, when compared to the previously mentioned studies.…”

“…As some of the studies that were used for the comparison did not sampled herbaceous species of Atlantic Forest (SOUZA-ALVES et al, 2014;VICENTE et al, 2005;OLIVEIRA et al, 2013;LANDIM et al, 2015) and Caatinga (SILVA; PRATA; FONSECA, 1991;FERREIRA, 2011;NOGUEIRA-JÚNIOR, 2011;MACHADO;MELLO, 2012), in this analysis only tree and shrub species were considered. The analyses were performed using the program PAST (HAMMER; HARPER; RYAN, 2001).…”

“…Among the papers analyzed with similar samplings, only in Landim et al (2015), was the Myrtaceae family among the most representative families (table 3). Despite this family not being representative in the Mata do Junco Wildlife Refuge, its richness was similar to most areas of Atlantic rainforest in the State of Sergipe (except Landim et al 2015) and various areas of Atlantic rainforest in the northeast of Brazil, for example in the State of Bahia , Pernambuco (Costa-Jr et al 2007) and Paraíba (Pereira & Alves 2006, Amazonas & Barbosa 2011.…”

“…Bromeliaceae and Orchidaceae especially noteworthy for their high richness and endemism. Local floristic surveys along the Atlantic Forest demonstrate that these families figure among the richest in distinct areas of this domain, but in different proportions depending on, for example, altitude, latitude, and vegetation type (Barros et al 1991;Alves-Araújo et al 2008;Amorim et al 2008Amorim et al , 2009Scheer and Kinoshita 2009;Coelho and Amorim 2014;Forzza et al 2014;Landim et al 2015).…”
