Ecological networks describe the interactions between species, the underlying structure of communities, the function and stability of ecosystems. To date, network analyses have been extensively applied to understand mutualistic and antagonistic interactions, but few have examined commensal interactions, particularly in neotropical regions. The inselbergs of southeastern Brazil are considered one of the three most important regions in the world in terms of terrestrial species diversity and endemism but are poorly studied. In this study, we constructed the first epiphyte-phorophyte commensalistic network in a Brazilian inselberg and examined its structure and robustness to simulated species loss. A total of 138 phorophyte individuals belonging to eight species were observed in 20 2 m × 50 m transects, interacting with 5,039 individuals of vascular epiphytes belonging to 85 species. The epiphyte-phorophyte network structure exhibited a low degree of specilization (H2'), low connectance and robustness; when the most connected phorophyte species were sequentially removed the number of secondary extinctions was high, based on robustness metrics. One generalist phorophyte, Pseudobombax sp. nov., was particularly important, hosting a high number of epiphyte species. A single phorophyte individual of Pseudobombax supported 46% of the total richness of the epiphyte community studied. Our results demonstrate that the richness and abundance of epiphytes were correlated with phorophyte size (as mensured by the DBH, diameter at breast height), probably due to increased habitat area and the time available for colonization. We conclude that phorophyte size and species identuty are important factors for predicting the structure of epiphyte-phorophyte interaction networks. 2We discuss the conservation implications of phorophyte loss and secondary extinctions of epiphytes in Atlantic Forest inselbergs.

Resumo Este trabalho objetivou catalogar a flora vascular de um inselberg no município de Patos, estado da Paraíba, Brasil e reconhecer a distribuição das espécies arbóreas em diferentes classes de altitude. O estudo foi desenvolvido no afloramento rochoso localmente conhecido como Morro do Carioca. Coletas botânicas foram realizadas mensalmente durante 18 meses. Para identificação dos táxons, bibliografias especializadas, guias de imagens, sites especializados e especialistas foram consultados. Foram registradas 120 espécies, distribuídas em 101 gêneros e 46 famílias, sendo Fabaceae a mais representativa (21 espécies), seguida por Euphorbiaceae (11 spp.), Convolvulaceae (nove spp.) e Malvaceae (oito spp.). O hábito predominante foi o arbustivo (35 espécies), seguido do subarbustivo (29 spp.), herbáceo (29 spp.), trepador (14 spp.) e arbóreo (13 spp.). Foram registradas ainda 17 espécies endêmicas da Caatinga. As classes de altitude mais representativas foram a Base - 250–291 m (quatro spp.) e Todo o afloramento (quatro spp.). A riqueza registrada no afloramento estudado é equivalente ao catalogado para outros afloramentos rochosos da região semiárida do Brasil.

This study presents a list of species of the two most important families with epiphytic elements, Bromeliaceae and Orchidaceae, from the Reserva de la Biosfera Barranca de Metztitlán (RBBM), the largest Reserve in Hidalgo, Mexico. Thirty-four species are included, 26 corresponding to species in three genera of bromeliads, and eight species in six genera of orchids. The new records represent 26.5% of the total listed in the area; nine of them are new records for the Reserve (RBBM) and one is new for Hidalgo State. This study reveals that endemism for both families is very important in the Reserve (55.88%), since it includes 13 Mexican bromeliads, of which two are endemic to Hidalgo and one to the Reserve, and three orchids, two endemic to Mexico and one to the Reserve. We found species with different types of relative abundance: rare (16) and occasional (7). Additionally, we include information about the category (IUCN, CITES, NOM-059-SEMARNAT) as well as uses reported in the literature for the species in the RBBM. The checklist is strictly based on information obtained from deposited herbarium specimens as well as from those collected during fieldwork. We suggest that a conservation plan (in situ and ex situ) for the RBBM is important and necessary. The predominant habit for both families is epiphytic (17 species); even though there are terrestrial (7) and saxicolous (2), and the remaining are facultative species (8). Nine species are included in some risk category. The present work is the most complete and updated list of Bromeliaceae and Orchidaceae for this important natural area in the Mexican State of Hidalgo. However, more fieldwork is needed to document the biodiversity of the area in general and its flora in particular, as a way to highlight the importance of protected areas in preserving biodiversity.
