Flotation Techniques for the Recovery of Small-Scale Archaeological Remains

Abstract: This paper outlines the procedures and equipment necessary for applying a simple flotation technique to recover animal bone, seeds, and other small cultural remains lost in the normal screening of soils from archaeological sites. Soil is initially processed in the field by a water-separation technique. The resulting concentrate is later treated, in the laboratory, by chemical flotation, to separate faunal from plant remains. This simple, inexpensive technique enables processing of soil in quantity, thereby allo… Show more

“…Water flotation, first introduced in 1968 (Streuver 1968) has become a highly mechanized operation (Watson 1976) while equipment such as scanning electron micrograph (SEM), have clearly identified the remaining characteristics of certain important seed foods (Ford 1985). Still, we have much to learn about the patterns of food discard by the prehistoric inhabitants, since an understanding of these patterns will allow for better sampling piocedures.…”

“…While a variety of techniques have been developed for floating lighter vegetable materials from heavier organics and Iithics (Jarman et al 1972;Limp 1974;Watson 1976;MInnIs and LeBlanc 1976), simple water separation (Struever 1968) was used for all but special sampling. Water separation Involved submerging a container with a fine screen (0.05 mm) bottom in the river and gently agitating the matrix until silts, sands, and clays washed out and lighter materials floated to the surface.…”

“…Apesar de serem conhecidos desde o final dos anos 60 (Struever, 1968), ainda não foram empregados no Brasil meridional. Usando este método poderemos resgatar restos biológicos que escapam dos procedimentos usuais de escavação e penei ração com malhas acima de dezesseis-avos de polegada, mesmo em solos ácidos.…”
