Flow Assurance of Hydrate Risk in Natural Gas/Oil Transportation: State-of-the-Art and Future Challenges

Abstract: Deepwater oil and gas development is extremely difficult and challenging. One of the most critical challenges stems from hydrate deposition, aggregation, and the eventual blocking of the deepwater oil and gas transportation system. The low-temperature and high-pressure environment in the deepwater oil and gas field causes the combination of gas molecules and water molecules to form hydrate, thus affects the hydrocarbon transportation. In this Perspective, to discuss the commonly faced safety issues for deepwa… Show more

“…In a different approach to energy storage, the progress and challenges in the development of betavoltaic nuclear batteries was reviewed by Naseem et al Zhang and co-workers discussed the strategies involved in detecting and preventing the formation of gas hydrates in deepwater transportation of natural gas and oil. The challenges in this field are similar to those found in clathrate gas extraction and storage …”

“…Natural gas hydrate is a nonstoichiometric crystal compound with the potential to serve as a sustainable energy source, owing to its widespread presence in subsea environments, high energy density and considerable gas storage capacity. Nevertheless, the development of hydrocarbon and gas hydrate in deepwater poses the challenging problem of hydrate blockage in pipelines, precipitated by the conducive conditions for hydrate formation . Hydrate blockage has been considered as a significant flow assurance concern in deepwater hydrocarbon resources production and transportation. …”

“…In such conditions, commonly found in offshore oil and gas production, water molecules create a cage structure that encapsulates molecules like methane, ethane, CO 2 , N 2 , and other components in natural gas, posing a severe flow assurance problem . Gas hydrates’ blockages may interrupt the oil and gas multiphase flow, leading to financial losses and operational issues …”
