FLOW DURATION CURVES II: A REVIEW OF APPLICATIONS IN WATER RESOURCES PLANNING1

Abstract: A streamfiow duration curve illustrates the relationship between the frequency and magnitude of streamflow. Flow duration curves have a long history in the field of water-resource engineering and have been used to solve problems in water-quality management, hydropower, instream flow methodologies, water-use planning, flood control, and river and reservoir sedimentation, and for scientific comparisons of streamflow characteristics across watersheds. This paper reviews traditional applications and provides exten… Show more

“…This type of information is commonly used for resource assessments including hydropower design schemes, water supply, planning and design of irrigation systems and water quality assessment with applications to stream-pollution and the evaluation of river habitats. Vogel and Fennessey (1995) presented a comprehensive review of FDC applications in water resources planning and management.…”

“…Through this procedure, the FDC is less sensitive to the exceptional years of flood or drought in the record, and we obtain the FDC for a typical (or median) year for the catchment. A detailed review of the physical interpretation and water resources applications of the FDC is provided in Vogel and Fennessey (1995).…”
