Fluorescence Processes and Scintillation of CeF3Crystal Excited by UV and X-Ray Synchrotron Radiation

Abstract: Photoluminescence properties of CeF3 have been investigated. Two kinds of emitting centers have been identified: regular Ce 3+ sites exhibiting two close emission bands (285 and 300 nm) and a fast fluorescence (20 ns) and several physically different perturbed Ce3 + sites giving rise to a broad emission band near 340 nm and a longer fluorescence (30-40 ns) the decay time of which varies with wavelength. An energy transfer occurs between these two kinds of centers. Scintillation properties have been studied und… Show more

“…Such a small Stokes shift, combined with a large crystal field splitting, has been reported for other Ce-based self-activated halide scintillators. (13,23) The shoulder band could be attributed to selfabsorption caused by spectral overlap between the excitation and emission bands, which was observed previously for crystalline K 2 CeCl 5 and CsCe 2 Cl 6 . (13,14) The fluorescence QE for the Ce 3+ 5d 1 -4f emissions was calculated to be approximately 60% under excitation by 325 nm light.…”

“…In the case of anisotropic piezo-optical properties, such dependence arises, for instance, in cubic crystals [24] and in tetragonal crystals cut along the optical axis [25]). It may be characterized by a special material constant e optical anisotropy parameter x that may be expressed through the components of the piezo-optic tensor x ¼ p 66 p 11 À p 12 (10) In our case, like in glasses, the equality (3) is fulfilled; therefore…”

“…A significant advantage of this crystal over other new experimental magneto-active media is a proven production technology so far as this material has long been used in scintillation detectors [10,11]. Another important advantage from the viewpoint of using this material in high-power laser systems is a possibility of producing from CeF 3 large-aperture (up to~10 cm) optical elements.…”

“…Although the reason is still unclear, similar results were observed in Ce-doped LaF 3 and CeF 3 scintillators. 37),38) The involved mechanisms are not understood and may vary depending on the material system, but it would be related with the excitation density and the quenching processes effectively works under high excitation density at localized emission centers. Further studies are required to understand in more detail.…”
