Fluorescence response of a thiazolidine carboxylic acid derivative for the selective and nanomolar detection of Zn(ii) ions: quantum chemical calculations and application in real samples

Abstract: A turn-on fluorescent sensor (L) for Zn2+detection in nano molar scale was synthesized and characterized. L shows fluorescence withKlebsiella pneumoniaandE. coli. L was utilized to detect Zn2+ions and bacteria in environmental water samples.

“…The interaction of metal ions with oxygen atoms in the benzene ring and nitrogen atom in the thiazolidine group changes their electron‐withdrawing properties. The possible reasons may be the formation of deprotonated Sen‐1 and also prevention of photo‐induced electron transfer processing by the addition of Zn 2+ ions …”

“…The possible reasons may be the formation of deprotonated Sen-1 and also prevention of photo-induced electron transfer processing by the addition of Zn 2+ ions. [48][49][50] The fluorescence quantum yield (Φ F ) of Sen-1 after saturation with Zn 2+ ions was determined at room temperature by the comparative method in water (Supporting Information Figure S14). The Φ F value of Sen-1 + Zn was found to be 0.52 (Supporting Information Table S1).…”
