Fluorescent monoclonal antibody for confirmation of Neisseria gonorrhoeae cultures

Abstract: We evaluated a monoclonal fluorescent-antibody (FA) reagent (Neisseria gonorrhoeae Culture Confirmation Test; Syva Co., Palo Alto, Calif.) for confirmation of N. gonorrhoeae isolates obtained from clinics for sexually transmitted diseases in four cities. The FA test was performed in parallel with established confirmation procedures on all organisms growing on 773 primary culture plates of modified Thayer-Martin agar. All N. gonorrhoeae isolates reacted with the FA reagent and produced a bright, easily interpre… Show more

“…Typical colonies containing gram-negative diplococci and giving a positive oxidase reaction were presumptively identified as N. gonorrhoeae. The identities of presumptive N. gonorrhoeae organisms were confirmed by using fluoresceinconjugated monoclonal antibodies (Syva Corp., Palo Alto, Calif.) (7).…”

“…Typical colonies containing gram-negative diplococci and giving a positive oxidase reaction were pre- sumptively identified as Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The identities of isolates from presumptive positive cultures were confirmed by using fluorescein-conjugated monoclonal antibodies (Syva Corp., Palo Alto, Calif.) (13). The vancomycin susceptibility of all isolates was determined by the agar dilution technique and doubling dilutions of vancomycin (15,20).…”
