Fluoride rinsing and dental health inequalities in 11‐year‐old children: an evaluation of a supervised school‐based fluoride rinsing programme in Edinburgh

Abstract: Fluoride rinsing can be effectively targeted at children from deprived areas through school-based initiatives. There are some difficulties in recruiting all children from the more deprived backgrounds, but overall reductions in D(3)MFT were observed.

“…Notably, the results obtained in the Swedish study were obtained in a 'low to medium caries risk area' with selfreported use of fluoride toothpaste twice daily and annual Sköld et al, 2005]. Another interesting observation from Scotland was that the mean prevalence of cavitated lesions was higher for non-rinsing subjects than for fluoride rinsers in all socioeconomic categories [Levin et al, 2009]. One study in adults investigated daily rinses with 0.09% NaF in institutionalized elderly and the net incidence of both crown and root caries was significantly reduced over a 2-year period [Wyatt and MacEntee, 2004].…”

“…Levin et al reported that rinsing with fluoride was effective in lowering DMFT levels in socioeconomically depressed areas [23,24]. According to a review regarding fluoride mouth rinses, they are often empirically recommended for CSHCNs [25].…”

“…The effect of school-based FMR on the incidence of caries in children has been investigated during the past four decades in a large number of clinical trials. A caries decline of 20%~50% due to FMR has been reported [3][4][5][6][7] . A Cochrane review also concluded that the use of FMR by children is associated with a clear reduction in the caries increment.…”

“…Caries, which might be associated with general health and nutrition status, is the main dental problem in children 9) , particularly those in socially deprived communities 10,11) . A school-based FMR program targeted to children in a deprived community may be an effective method to reduce the prevalence in caries and inequalities in dental health 6) . Furthermore, considering that children of low socioeconomic status have a disproportionately high share of dental caries, a school-based FMR program could be more effective to children in a deprived community 6,12) .…”
