Fluoroscopy-Guided Endoscopic Removal of Foreign Bodies

Abstract: In most cases of ingested foreign bodies, endoscopy is the first treatment of choice. Moreover, emergency endoscopic removal is required for sharp and pointed foreign bodies such as animal or fish bones, food boluses, and button batteries due to the increased risks of perforation, obstruction, and bleeding. Here, we presented two cases that needed emergency endoscopic removal of foreign bodies without sufficient fasting time. Foreign bodies could not be visualized by endoscopy due to food residue; therefore, f… Show more

“…During the process of removal, the complete removal of the toothpick should be confirmed, if the toothpick is not completely removed or the toothpick failed to be removed by endoscopy, then the patient should proceed to surgery. [ 9 – 11 ] In the published literature, the surgical approach is predominantly via laparotomy, and the fraction by laparoscopic surgery is less than 10%. [ 12 ] In general, laparoscopic surgery possesses the following potential advantages: [ 9 , 13 ] (1) smaller incisions, better cosmesis, less pain, and faster recovery.…”

“…A few studies have reported emergent and safe endoscopic removal of foreign bodies using fluoroscopic guidance. 12 This is an unusual case report of successful removal of an embedded foreign body using fluoroscopy-guided endoscopy without any complications. We strongly recommend using EGD under fluoroscopy if the X-ray impermeable material cannot be seen through the endoscope or if it cannot be localized to the site of the material.…”

“…These complications usually occur when patients swallow large or sharp-pointed objects. 3,4 However, the same complications can also occur after ingesting magnetic foreign bodies.…”
