Fluxes in exceptional field theory and threebrane sigma-models

Abstract: Starting from a higher Courant bracket associated to exceptional generalized geometry, we provide a systematic derivation of all types of fluxes and their Bianchi identities for four-dimensional compactifications of M-theory. We show that these fluxes may be understood as generalized Wess-Zumino terms in certain topological threebrane sigma-models of AKSZ-type, which relates them to the higher structure of a Lie algebroid up to homotopy. This includes geometric compactifications of M-theory with G-flux and on … Show more

“…Employing the AKSZ construction, the authors constructed examples of four-dimensional topological field theories. In a similar spirit, yet another example of this kind was found in [33] with an underlying Poisson structure and a 4vector R satisfying [Π, R] = 0. Here we are interested in cases that go beyond both above approaches, in that we do not have a vanilla QP structure due to the twist by a 5-form H, and for the same reason [Π, R] = 0.…”

“…For this reason, the type of topological field theories we present here truly require the above choice of M in order to be realised. This was also discussed in a special four-dimensional case in [33]. The fields of the theory are now obtained as pull-backs of the four types of graded coordinates according to…”

“…From this one concludes that the full set of Bianchi identities of exceptional field theory must include connections and their derivatives understood as proper field strengths. Some progress in this direction has been made in [35] where dynamical fluxes of the scalar sector of the SL(5) ExFT has been analyzed by considering Courant brackets of the Type II fluxes. The ideas described above provide extension of their results to the full ExFT including fluxes of the tensor sector.…”

“…For n ≤ 9, T −1 (e n ) is the so-called embedding tensor representation [57,85] in supergravity in 11 − n dimensions [80]. T −1 is therefore the natural representation for the generalised fluxes in exceptional geometry [86][87][88]. We shall label the generators of T −1 by t I and they transform as…”
