FlywheelTools: Data Curation and Manipulation on the Flywheel Platform

Abstract: The recent and growing focus on reproducibility in neuroimaging studies has led many major academic centers to use cloud-based imaging databases for storing, analyzing, and sharing complex imaging data. Flywheel is one such database platform that offers easily accessible, large-scale data management, along with a framework for reproducible analyses through containerized pipelines. The Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS) is the de facto standard for neuroimaging data, but curating neuroimaging data into BIDS ca… Show more

“…In addition, several commercial platforms are available for neuroimaging data management and analytics [e.g., Flywheel (Tapera et al, 2021 ), QMENTA, Nordic Tools, Ceretype], especially for clinical applications. While these platforms offer a wide range of neuroinformatics functionalities, they are difficult to evaluate due to their high cost of services and proprietary content.…”

“…The fact that this application is not freely available provides added issues, as it is not yet very popular, especially within the preclinical imaging facilities. Other recently developed commercial systems based on common preclinical workflow and that can also support multimodality data storage and management are SABER [19] and Flywheel [44]. By contrast, we are developing a new data management system specifically designed to directly support preclinical imaging workflow for all modalities and experimental setups.…”

“…Unfortunately, many existing solutions lack the required flexibility for research applications of neuroimaging data analysis 26 . For example, single-install pre-programmed analysis pipelines are a popular solution amongst clinicians, but researchers typically custom-tailor analysis pipelines toward specific research questions [27][28][29] . The issues of inaccessibility in neuroimaging software have been recognized by the NeuroDebian 2 and NeuroFedora 30 projects, which provide a wide range of neuroimaging tools packaged for Linux operating systems.…”
