Focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver: a link with sickle cell disease?

Abstract: Focal nodular hyperplasia is a benign liver tumour that is rare in children. We report the second case of a child with sickle ceil disease presenting with symptomatic focal nodular hyperplasia. The possible pathogenesis of focal nodular hyperplasia and the association with sickle ceil disease are discussed.Focal nodular hyperplasia of the liver is a rare benign lesion found predominantly in women during their reproductive years.' It consists of a well circumscribed area of hyperplastic liver parenchyma that ma… Show more

“…FNH has been observed in patients with sinusoidal obstruction syndrome due to hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (Sudour et al 2009). Two reports document children with sickle cell anemia (sickle cell disease, SCD) who developed FNH, possibly caused by the impairment of blood flow by sickling erythrocytes (erythrostasis) and the tendency for small vessel occlusion (Markowitz et al 1980;Heaton et al 1991). In fact, sickling in the sinusoidal vascular bed, making part of sickle cell hepatopathy, causes a nonuniform blood distribution.…”
