Priority nursing foci and interventions for older people in acute care settings

“…However, the current nurse-to-patient ratio (5.8 nurses/1,000 inhabitants) in Portugal, which is below the average in Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries in 2014, is a major barrier to this change as it is expected to continue decreasing, particularly in the National Health Service (Observatório Português dos Sistemas de Saúde (OPSS), 2015). For this reason, the phenomenon of older people with health problems should be analyzed from a comprehensive and cross-sectional perspective in order to identify the most relevant nursing foci and produce the necessary evidence to improve prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation interventions within the health/illness transition process (Passos, Sequeira, & Fernandes, 2014).
