Folate food source, usual intake, and folate status in Korean adults

Abstract: BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVESThe purposes of the study were to investigate folate intakes and plasma folate concentrations as well as estimate folate status in Korean healthy adults.SUBJECTS/METHODSA total of 254 healthy 19- to 64-year-old adults (68 men and 186 women) living in Seoul metropolitan area, Gumi, and Kwangju, Korea participated. “…Folate status of our study participants was within the range reported in previous studies of Korean adults. In previous studies, approximately 6% to 13% of males [ 13 , 33 , 34 ] and 0% to 12% of females [ 13 , 14 , 33 - 36 ] had serum or plasma folate concentrations < 6.8 nmol/L. Marginal folate deficiency (6.8-13.4 nmol/L) was presented in 44.4% of males and 34.4% of females among 195 Korean adults [ 13 ].…”

“…The Korean diet group, compared to control, was related to a decrease in glycated hemoglobin level, triglyceride level, and blood pressure [27,28]. In respect of folate intake, baechukimchi (Chinese style cabbage kimchi), rice, spinach, eggs, and laver were the major source of this micronutrient for Koreans [29].…”

“…In a population of individuals aged 50 years or more, 2.2–2.3% had a deficiency in folic acid (<3.0 ng/mL) [28]. In healthy Korean adults, about 13.3% of men and 3.2% of women showed a folate deficiency (<3.0 ng/mL) [30] but there has been a lack of research in elderly populations. Folate deficiency was observed in 0.02% (<1.5 ng/mL) and 1.8% (<3.0 ng/mL) of individuals in the KLOSCAD sample.…”
