Folk medicinal plant mixtures: Establishing a protocol for further studies

Abstract: The present analysis has confirmed that it is possible to study the data of plants in mixtures as thoroughly as when they are considered in isolation in an ethnofloristic catalogue, and maybe this kind of ethnobotanical investigation could be a first step for future pharmacological studies that may result in a relevant complement to the current phytotherapy market.

“…For preparations with more than one plant, we obtained the recently proposed index of taxon usefulness in mixtures (ITUM) [56], which is the quotient between the number of reports of one taxon in mixtures and its total citations, whether simple or complex presentation. This index indicates the exclusiveness of taxa in mixtures when the value is one or closer to one.…”

“…The most common pharmaceutical form does not change in respect to individual plants, tisane being reported in half of the mixtures, followed by poultice (14.29%). The informant consensus factor (F IC ) for medicinal mixtures data is 0.77, a value between Gironès district (0.56) [17] and the study carried out in two Catalan territories (Alt Empordà and Ripollès) (0.85) [56].…”

“…Forty-six percent indicated that they use herbal remedies exclusively to manage animal health conditions, 40% used both EVP and orthodox drugs while only 14% stated that they rely on orthodox veterinary preparations alone. The use of medicinal plants in the treatment of diseases of animals is exclusively has been documented by Gras et al (2018). Other recent studies in some states in Northern Nigeria also reported 15.31% go for orthodox medicine only (De Smet, 1998;Neils et al, 2008), the cost and non-availability of drugs or access to animal health facilities in the rural settlement may be a contributing factor.…”

“…We name "use" (simplified for "use of the ingredient") to each single combination of ingredient -preparation -administration and pathology. Therefore, we focus on the uses of each ingredient, although another approach is to establish the focus on mixtures (Gras et al, 2018). Each use can be recorded once or repeatedly, thus "record" is for us each "use" given by an independent informant.…”
