Follicule to Follicule Heterogeneity of Sebum Excretion

Abstract: We have evaluated the normal variations in the sebum excretion rate from follicle to follicle on the forehead by using the noninvasive techniques of the Lipometre® and Sebutape®. For a given overall amount of sebum excreted to the surface of the skin during a limited period of time, both the number of active sebaceous follicles and the amount of lipids excreted by them may vary. Significant intraindividual and interindividual differences may be found for these parameters. Such a noninvasive approach to the bio… Show more

“…Almost 15 years ago, progress was made simultaneously by two research teams introducing a method using standardized hydrophobic lipid-absorbent tapes [44][45][46] made of an opaque, open-celled, microporous polymeric film. Since its introduction, it has always been considered as complementary and as useful as the popular photometric method [19,[47][48][49][50].…”

“…The method allows those without sophisticated equipment to obtain a rough but reasonable estimate of the skin greasiness. Better quantitative evaluation is achieved using computerized image analysis [46,[48][49][50]52], transmission photometry [47] or reflectance colorimetry [53,54].…”

“…This intriguing observation incited Harms [368] to propose a new concept: the ‘heterogeneity of sebaceous follicles'. Few years before, Piérard [369] had shown intraindividual and interindividual variations on the number of active sebaceous follicles. In fact, wrote Piérard, many of the sebaceous glands are ‘quiescent or barely active'.…”

“…For a given amount of sebum, the excretion varied from gland to gland suggesting the existence of ‘acne-prone' follicles. Little evidence explains however why only 1-3% of sebaceous follicles show acne in acne-prone people [369,370]. …”
