Follow-up assessment of patients with Pure Neural Leprosy in a reference center in Rio de Janeiro—Brazil

Abstract: Introduction Pure Neural Leprosy (PNL) is a rare clinical form of leprosy in which patients do not present with the classical skin lesions but have a high burden of the disability associated with the disease. Clinical characteristics and follow up of patients in PNL are still poorly described in the literature. “…As a distinctive type of leprosy, it has always been an enigma, as clinical and management ambiguities remain. Nonetheless, there is worldwide acceptance of PNL as a distinct type of leprosy [ 23 , 24 ]. An epidemiological study carried out in India identified 65 (4.2%) PNL out of the total 1542 leprosy patients seen over the 1993 to 2003 period [ 33 ].…”

“…For treatment purposes, the World Health Organization (WHO) currently classifies Hansen disease cases into two groups according to the number of skin lesions: multibacillary (MB) and paucibacillary (PB) 7 . Pure neural leprosy (PNL) is a rare clinical form of Hansen disease in which patients do not present with classic skin lesions but have a high burden of disability associated with the disease 8 . Dermatologic clinical manifestations of Hansen disease are highly variable and are described as “great imitators” 9 , while the clinical neurological manifestations of Hansen disease are still unclear.…”
