Follow-up investigation of open trigger digit release

Abstract: Open trigger digit release constitutes an adequate low-risk surgical procedure for treatment of trigger digit. In this study, we could show that the incidence of this disease is not significantly correlated with the manual strain, trauma, BMI, hand dominance or concomitant diseases like diabetes mellitus, rheumatoid arthritis, renal insufficiency, and hypothyroidism. Additionally, this study illustrates the importance of a careful postoperative follow-up treatment to avoid potential persistent functional limit… Show more

“…Open release is generally considered a simple low-risk procedure, although may result in complications such as persistence, recurrence, prolonged pain, infection, stiffness, flexion contracture, bowstringing, and digital nerve injury [7]. Incidence of such complications varies widely from 1 to 43 % [1][2][3][4][5][8][9][10][11]. Most studies involve small numbers, which limit the ability to generalize findings and to identify risk factors.…”

“…Flexor tendon triggering is due to stenosing tenosynovitis of the flexor tendons, which is actually caused by a mismatch between the volume of the flexor tendon sheath and its contents [1,2]. The diagnosis and treatment of flexor tendon triggering is quite familiar to most orthopedic surgeons however, extensor triggering is an uncommon condition that may be missed unless looked for carefully [10].…”

“…Trigger finger commonly refers to flexor tendon triggering which is clinically diagnosed by a sudden extension of the affected finger at the proximal interphalangeal joint (PIPJ) [1,2]. It happens when a flexor tendon passes through the first annular (A1) pulley with palpable triggering over the palmar side of the metacarpophlangeal joint (MCPJ) due to pathologic changes within the A1 pulley or the flexor tendons [1,2].…”
