Follow-up of colorectal cancer

Abstract: Our study concludes that intensive follow-up detects more recurrent cancers at a stage amenable to curative resection, resulting in an improvement in survival of recurrences and an increased overall five-year cumulative rate of survival.

“…Although curative resection of advanced colorectal carcinoma without synchronous distant metastasis (ie stage II or III) is feasible, a significant number of patients develop local recurrence or distant metastasis heterochronously (Newland et al, 1995;Rosen et al, 1998). Liver metastasis is an important prognostic determinant for the clinical prognosis of colorectal carcinoma (Doci et al, 1991;Wanebo et al, 1996;Rees et al, 1997).…”

“…A significant number of patients with colorectal carcinoma who undergo apparently curative resection develop local recurrence or distant metastasis (Rosen et al, 1998). Adjuvant chemotherapy or radiation therapy is needed after resection for such biologically aggressive colorectal carcinomas.…”

“…The meta-analysis by Rosen et al (97) included the two first published randomized follow-up studies (7,18) and three comparative cohort studies (11,17,95), totalling 2,005 patients. Only studies including CEA in the follow-up schedule were included, and for that reason the study by Kjeldsen et al (16) was excluded.…”

“…A significant number of patients with colorectal carcinoma who undergo apparently curative operation unfortunately develop local recurrence or distant metastasis leading to shorter survival (Rosen et al, 1998). Therefore, adjuvant therapy is needed after surgical resection for such biologically aggressive colorectal carcinomas.…”
